This census lists John, Margaret, and Mary as living in Lexington. He served in the military on 28 Aug 1862 in St. Joseph, Missouri.^{(186) (187)} He was mustered into service on 24 Oct 1862 at Benton Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri. He was assigned to Company H of the 35th Regiment of Missouri Volunteers. He died on 18 Sep 1863 in Helena, Arkansas. ^{(188)(186) (189)} He died (evidently of smallpox) in a smallpox hospital. The official cause of death was "disease". He was described as "5' 7" tall, had fair complexion, gray eyes, and light hair." on 29 Sep 1863 in Helena, Arkansas.⁽¹⁸⁸⁾ He was dead at the time this description was written.

He was married to Margaret Ann Pack or Duncan on 27 May 1858 in Richmond, Missouri. ⁽¹⁹⁰⁾ They were married in Richmond by the Rev. Z. Quesenberry, a Methodist minister. Margaret Ann Pack or Duncan died on 24 Feb 1874 in Lexington, Missouri, about 35 or 36 years old. John Benjamin Weedin and Margaret Ann Pack or Duncan had the following children:
